Music that inspires me, - and is extremely comfortable, easy-listening and genious to work to:

Boards of Canada
Cafe del Mar

...
and
Sigur Rós (of course)

Yeah Boards of Canada are cool. 1969 is still my favourite, though Dayvan Cowboy is pretty good.

I find Sigur Rós excellent for painting landscapes too, as well as writing. They're not too intrusive, but at the same time the songs are so powerful you can let yourself get swept away if you choose.

If I'm looking to paint something a bit dramatic, then Prog Rock with lots of pomp would be my choice. Spocks Beard, Ayreon, I.Q and Nightwish; though of course Nightwish are metal.

Another great source of inspiration I found for painting landscapes; the soundtracks off of BBC wildlife/science documentaries, man there's some truely epic scores to be had; Blue Planet, Walking With Beasts etc etc it's all good.

^_^

Yeah, Boards of Canada are great for music to imagine to. I am a big fan of Mike Oldfield's music as a source for inspiration.
