I’m going to come flat out and say it – Kon is officially a genius. I’ve admired his previous work, Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress, but felt it premature to render judgment on the basis of just two films. Tokyo Godfathers has made my previous hesitation seem silly. It is, and by no stretch, the best film experience I’ve had all this and last year.

I feel it’ll probably take me a couple of more viewings and a period of several months’ reflection to come to a coherent analysis of the film. But, I’ll include several random observations: The art is amazing, it’s particularly suited to the unique characters Kon came up with. The direction is impeccable; Kon realizes that animation has advantages beyond the rendering of the fantastic, that, with great skill, it can be used to tell a story that would otherwise be found lacking if it were filmed. The story is entirely sublime, in it’s original Romantic context; it has elements that I would describe as Altman-esque. There were periods of genuine laughter, and it was so refreshing that these were directed not at the characters, but at the situations. These humorous scenes were, with surgical precision, timed to balance the sadder parts of the story. The poignancy of the sadness at times made me weep like a little girl. And I’m not afraid to admit it.

It’s in theaters now - go see it!

Also: here's a link to his next project, a 13 episode tv series. The trailer seems to promising. I can't wait for someone to fan-sub this and post in on bit torrent.
