Its a history lesson, not really entertainment. Worth watching once to say you did.

A lot of it is very slow-moving, though I thought "The Flying House" and parts of "Flip's Circus" were still cool and surprising (the Man in the Moon going after the flying house). I actually dug the history too -- it was interesting to see McCay and other classic cartoonists like George McManus in the live-action segments of "Gertie".

After the DVD had gone back to Netflix, I had the chance to see a 16mm print of "Gertie" in a museum show. It was much more fun to see with a crowd -- the kids and the adults loved it, even with a tinny tape recorded sountrack.

I really like "Flying House."

But yeah, by today's standards, his stuff is incredibly slow. I mean, this stuff was designed for an audience that was going to say "wow! a drawing that moves!!!!"

Some of his animation is pretty solid, though, even if not actually entertaining.
