Mike, would you happen to have any scans of artwork before it was colored and cleaned up? I would love to see that brushwork better.

Also, what size do you work?

Still loving this comic Mike, gorgeous coloring like always :)

I finally figured out to put links up on my comic so hopefully I'm sending some people your way :) But I haven't been around much longer than you yet.

Oops, forgot to link this week's. Sorry, it's been a hectic week!

Tony, I'll dig through my scans and post something later this week.

This week's is a single panel update, which I apologize for, but it's been a hectic week, so I granted myself an easy one. But at the same time, the timing was right to dwell on a potentially tenuous situation for Swoop.

Image

And as requested, here is a scan of just my inks, complete with pencils, mistakes and what-not, along with some tech info.

Image

I work on 14x17 bristol paper. Sometimes vellum, sometimes smooth. I use a size 3 Winsor Newton Series 7 brush, which I sometimes think does the work for me. The pencil is a Col-Erase in some shade of blue. It's terribly difficult to erase and I have to spend some time erasing bits of it in Photoshop even when I scan with the threshold setting just right. I scan in four parts at 600dpi in bitmap. This makes it easier to select the black outlines to put on a separate layer when I want to turn them into different colors (by locking the transparency). I'm sure there's an easier way to do it, but I've gotten pretty quick with this method and it seems to preserve some of the occasional drybrushing I do without loss of texture.

And finally, here's some character concept work on Max Fluffage. You can see at one point I was toying with the idea of him being a bull. The manly yet dopey pig idea won out in the end. He's kind of a mix between Kronk from Emperor's New Groove and Mamma Aiuto Boss from Porco Rosso (brilliantly voiced by Brad Garrett).

Thanks for looking!
