One of my favorite artist blogs is the Gurney Journey, by artist James Gurney. He's currently holding a challenge he calls Art by Committee. He posts a random selection of a science fiction novel and asks any willing artists to interpret it visually. This week's challenge is to illustrate this scene.

"Stone emitted a kind of bark -- ha! -- and showed his teeth again."

We have no idea what novel it came from or anything else about the story. Here's my submission.

I haven't visited this forum in a little while, but it's nice to see what you're doing. I especially like the cover do-overs on your blog. I look forward to seeing more of these.

Thanks, Tony. I enjoy getting caught up with the Casualties of Nature gang as well. You have a very consistent quality and style.

Here's this week's ABC challenge:

Either I'm wasting my time with these, or it just might be going somewhere.

I think that story generating tools, prompts and challenges like these are a form of apophenia -spontaneous perception of connections and meaningfulness of unrelated phenomena. Have you seen the comics people do with scripts that come from spam emails?

Here's my latest entry for the ABC challenge:

This is cool, Andrew. And thanks for mentioning Gurney's blog. It's really great.

Thanks, Kazu. My family is loving Amulet!

I had a good time sneaking in references like naming the guy Harold (Hermes was a herald) and being sent to the "underworld" to get the Tarturus ("Hell") file for Mr. Orcus (the one who sent people there in Greek mythology).

If anyone visits Gurney's blog, you will learn more about art than you can imagine! http://www.gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/

The Art by Committee Challenge comes every week from James Gurney, the creator of Dinotopia. His sequential art is almost a comic! His blog is awesome. from technical painting advice to a fun challenge ever week. The latest challenge from http://www.gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/ is

"Snarking hell, Jensen, you damn near got us roasted"

"Their voices were high pitched and piercing, yet human." This was the ABC Challenge this week. I immediately thought of the BeeGees, and worked them into the current Andar epic.
