When you say "popularity doesn't mean anything," you're technically incorrect, as popularity means that it is popular.

The rise in popularity would seem to indicate that readers are not scared away by bottoms and breasts and science.

It's like if you ask "Hey, if you mix 'Copper,' 'A Lesson is Learned,' and a pretty, nerdy girl, will that make people angry?"

The answer you'll usually get is No.

Secondly, popularity doesn't mean anything. Celine Dion is popular. Friends is popular. Megatokyo is popular. No offense to people who may like one or all of those things, but they turn my stomach. Popularity is no guarantee of quality. More readers does not make your comic any less imperfect or above criticism in any way.

I did not say nor imply that a rise in popularity has any correlation with quality. The only reason I brought it up is that you threatened to leave if the comic continued in the direction it's in now and that others would follow, but my site statistics do not reflect this.

And yes, you are dismissing me. I think the two lengthy posts defending the deep symbolism and wry commentary of Kimiko's giant butt shot pretty much prove that. My guess is that you're so used to getting heaps of praise -- and don't get me wrong, there's a lot to praise about the work you've done -- that my criticisms just sound ridiculous to you. It's a common syndrome among webcomic creators.

Why is it difficult to believe that I may actually have thought through every comic and have good reasons (at least for me) for doing the things I do? You criticize a portion of my comic and I explain why I did that and why I think it's a good choice. Saying "wow, I hadn't thought of that" would be insincere on my part because I have considered other options, including many of the things you mentioned. I put a lot of thought into every comic, and just because it's not in keeping with what you want me to do doesn't mean I ignore feedback. You shouldn't make assumptions about what kind of feedback I get from other readers, either. It isn't necessary or relevant.

Please don't take it personally if I choose not to change my comic based on your criticisms. I get a lot of feedback from a lot of people, and most of it is contradictory with the rest. Some people like Hob over the one shots and vice versa. Most people like stories focused on Kimiko and some don't, and some people only want me to draw comics based on Rupert and Hubert. I can't please everyone and I'm not going to try to. In the end I have to go with my gut and make comics that I enjoy above all else. The format of Dresden Codak is constantly changing, and after the Hob series ends the site will go again in a completely different direction. Some people won't like it, but that's the way it goes.

DC. For the record, I like Hob for almost exactly the same reasons that it is being criticized. For the example, the whole salamander story thing popping up out of nowhere but being completely relevant, great. As far as aspects being akward, your comics have always been akward (not in a bad way). They progress left to right, right to left, diagonally, etc. with stories not always being explained completely and characters popping in and out without consequence. To me, all that combined with a unique sense of style added to amazing artwork makes not necessarily the best but by far the most engaging webcomic that I choose to read (although at this rate it may be the best as well). I thought the akwardness of the ass shot was great, not in a nerd fantasy sort of way but hilarious. I also think if the twins were handled differently it would've ruined the impact. The line "You do realize why we have lightning bolts on our shirts, right?" is one of my favorites yet. Hilarious. Anyways, I hope you aren't taking any of the criticisms seriously because your comic seems to be developing just fine at its own rate. Do not take anything I say too seriously either, I don't know much about artistic creativity. I just thought I'd try to throw some positive out there. I could keep going but I simply don't have the time. Keep it up.

I agree with Eliot. What one might consider a flaw, many others might consider a virtue.

I assume we're all posting things here with the hopes of getting feedback, including constructive criticism. I've tossed out some thoughts of my own towards some, thinking, "Hey, take it or leave it." Because I realize that just because I would change it if it was mine, doesn't necessarily make it "wrong". On the other hand, the Emperor never did put on clothes because nobody pointed out he wasn't wearing any. If nobody points out obvious flaws in my work, I won't ever improve!

In times like this, I recall the wise words of Thumper, "If ya can't say something nice, don't say nuthin' at alllll..."

Well. Some of the criticisms I agree with, others I don't, but I'm still reading. Do you know how many webcomics I still read once-per-update? Not many. Less than ten for sure. And this is one of them.

*shrugs*

And here comes another page. This pretty much wraps up the first half of the story.

I agree with Kazu. Just keep going!

We were talking about how nice it is that the characters look like they're actually in the environments, seeing what's actually there. It's also nice how they look like they have thoughts and feelings. It sounds like something really basic, but there's so much work out there that's missing that.

Hooray! Thanks, I think the biggest problem I'm having right now is learning how to draw faster.

I just stumbled upon this thread with a click, but what a pleasant thing to discover.

Good job.

I used to think about stuff like this when I was a kid. I'd draw comics about me teleporting into a parallel universe to find original ideas for my comics, but then almost dying because an infinite amount of me's in infinite parallel universes had the same idea and every single one of them came to the parallel universe I was in to find the original idea, thereby causing the parallel universe to implode with the infinite increase in mass.

Boy, that sentence was longer than I expected.

Anyway, your comic hits the spot. Especially page three which caused me to laugh out loud. Tee hee.

I feel like you have a novel’s worth of material in 16 densely packed pages. It’s like what would happen if Chris Ware did web comics and was interested in sci-fi/fantasy. How cool it would be to have a book with pages big enough to hold your comic.

Or course, that would require a lot more pages and a lot more work, but that’s what being a cartoonist is all about, isn’t it?

Good job, and keep doing what you do.
