The way I parsed his description was that Copper is a comic that can be enjoyed by all ages. He was saying that adults (as well as kids) would like the strip on its artistic merits, not because there is some "hidden level of meaning" that would go over kids' heads but be appreciated by adults. In other words, it's a good comic. Why else would it be in a 'Top 50 Comics of 2005' list?
Reading it again, I agree... He seems to be saying that adults will enjoy it for the visuals and not for the reason they normally enjoy kids' fare (snotty satire). I guess I found the wording confusing because I wasn't familiar with the Harvard Lampoon, but now I can see how he's taking a swipe at American comedy in general, and rightfully so. (I think even Copper's worst critic couldn't link it to that genre.)
So he's basically saying "I like this because it's pretty and it's not full of crappy humor like everything else these days." I just wish his thumbs-up to the writing were more overt, since there are plenty of positive things that could be said. It serves its purpose regardless.
