best non-mystery-meat chinese in LA/Burbank, etc?

Post by aimee » Thu Jul 12, 2007 10:23 pm

help me oh, wise ones. I crave really good chinese food that has been americanized just enough that I won't bite into something scary.

I am having no luck. am willing to go on a food-treck to get it! (but I live in the Burbank/Glendale area)

I know some of you must live around here! :)

Ah, turns out you live in the perfect area. My personal favorite is the Fortune Inn in downtown Glendale.

The food is better than the decor (clean and corporate, if a little too open, though the big windows let in lots of light). And they dip their fortune cookies in white chocolate!

They deliver, too, and FAST. 20 minutes to my door is not atypical.

ps. I checked the date on this after I posted. Hope you're not still hungry! :)

"Gourmet 88" in downtown Burbank. Its the best I could find while I lived in the 'bank. And its "american" safe. I like the braised string beans, yum.

I was just looking online, there is one in Glendale too

This being said, the valley is not the best place for food of any kind.

There's no such thing as good Americanized Chinese food. Like any food, the best places are in the ethnic towns. And don't get apprehensive over Chinese cuisine. If you can eat sushi, nothing should scare you.

I don't think I've ever been to a "mystery meat" Chinese place before... there's always something I can find that's palatable! Personally, my favorite Chinese restaurants are: ... -gabriel-2
(This is probably my favorite restaurant in LA in general, along with Cafe Beaujoulais in Eagle Rock. It is actually Vietnamese/Chinese. Get the french-style beef steak, sauteed pea sprouts, and fried tofu. SO DELICIOUS. Also, the lobster is mouthwatering! Be prepared to go there early to get a seat or else you'll have to wait 1hr+. We got there at 4pm for dinner once and still had to wait 30 min. The place is GOOD.) ... 0woo%20bbq
(This one is good for authentic Chinese bbq and roast duck, and for a cheap lunch! Soooo tasty! Get the bbq pork, it is delicious.)

There are SO MANY awesome Chinese places on Valley Blvd in Alhambra -- another good one is Lu's Garden:
Get their eggplant, tofu strips, fish, and ground meat side dishes. This is a porridge place, so you get in line and order a bunch of small plates. They bring it to your table with porridge that has big chunks of sweet potato in it yum~ great in winter and it's open late.

There is also the infamous Boiling Crab, which I haven't tried yet but all my friends just love:
It is actually Cajun style cooking, I hear.

Needless to say, if you want Chinese/Vietnamese food, Valley Blvd is the place to go. I live very close to there and we still have barely scratched the surface of what it has to offer.
