Listening to a lot of these two gals today. I'd probably have to thrust them into the folk/bluegrass category (though Sarah Harmer would seem to fall more towards the pop/folk genre), and I was wondering if anyone knew of any similar contemporary female artists (Sarah's old band, Weeping Tile doesn't count)?

Interestingly, I discovered Gillian Welch by way of Sarah Harmer -- Sarah Harmer covered one of Welch's songs, "Revelator," at a live performance, and it was absolutely riveting.

Kim Stockwood came to mind, but she's a bit more country (I wonder where she disappeared to).

A bit more mainstream: Sarah Mclachlan?

Nah, I was thinking rootsier. I used to be big into McLachlan, mostly because of the influence of a friend of mine, but I wasn't all too impressed with her latest album. I still listen to Fumbling Towards Ecstacy every once in awhile, and it's still her best and most cohesive album.

I told you so. Although I tend to prefer the term 'music slut.' I'm easy, but I don't actively go looking for bad music to get into bed with. Err. Yeah.

Not a clue. Her site is a little sparse on performance details, but I do know she's blowing through Toronto in late April. I doubt the performance will the same as the last time I saw her in her hometown of Kingston (where I was also going to school at the time) -- aside from a great performance, she had brought her oleander plant up on stage with her, and sang a song that she wrote for the plant at one point. Good times, that was.

Is there a way to share MP3 files on a message board? I know so very little about how to do this but, Kean, reading through this post of yours I think I have some music you would really like, but I don't know how to post something like that.

Let me know.

I'd recommend June Tabor, but I don't know if you'd like her. She has a really great voice, but her songs are mostly traditional and very sad.

Sarah Harmer sings on one of the songs on the new weakerthans album.
Benediction, I think is the name of the song. It's good.
Not very helpful I know, but that's all I know about her. heh.

You'll probably need to host your MP3s on a server somewhere with a half decent bandwidth allowance (the free webhosts are pretty much out of the question when you're dealing with MP3s).

I could set up a public FTP site, but I'm not sure if I can handle (or afford) the constant transfers.

Sara McLachlan, barf, and whore shouldn't even be said together. Sara is bad ass on her perfect album Surfacing. Does anyone like Beth Orton?

The answer to this question is now an unequivocal yes. As is mentioned there, she's touring to support her next album, All of Our Names, which is set for a March 23rd release. I'm certainly looking forward to it.

The dates (I'm considering driving down to Kingston to catch her playing again at the Grand):

Jan. 30: Vancouver (Vancouver East Cultural Center; Rock for Choice)
March 26: Kingston, Ontario (Grand Theatre)
April 13: Ferndale, Mich. (Magic Bag; w/Hayden)
April 14: Chicago (Martyrs'; w/Hayden)
April 16: Pittsburgh (Rosebud; w/Hayden)
April 17: Alexandria, Va. (The Birchmere; w/Hayden)
April 19: Philadelphia (Theatre Of Living Arts; w/Hayden)
April 21: Boston (Paradise Rock Club; w/Hayden)
April 24: Winooski, Vt. (Higher Ground; w/Hayden)
April 26-27: Toronto (Winter Garden Theatre; w/Hayden)
April 29: Montreal (Cabaret Du Plateau; w/Hayden)
May 1: Rochester, N.Y. (Water Street Music Hall; w/Hayden)
May 2: Buffalo, N.Y. (The Tralf Music Hall; w/Hayden)

...and holy crap, an amazing cover of "Dusty Boxcar Walls" by Gillian Welch. The guitar solos never fail to give me goosebumps.

(the MP3 will only be up for a couple of days or so, so you might do well to grab it soon.)

I don't know if they're exactly like what you're talking about but there's a group called Painting Dasies, and they're pretty kool.

I don't know where anyone'd find there stuff, esp. outside of Canada, but worth the effort (Maybe, all depends on taste though, don't it?)
