Supposedly, Tim Delaughter (former lead singer and guitarist of Tripping Daisy) had a sound in his head after the band broke up. That sound, when actualized, became a 22 piece ensemble that creates happy happy music. They have a website too! The band all wears matching robes which makes me think of hippies, but their music is still great! They're currently touring with David Bowie and they're definately worth a listen!

Saw them when they openend for Bowie during part of his North American tour. I don't think anyone was expecting all the happy songs and sounds. Hehehe. Fun cd. I'll try and catch them when they tour by themselves.

They're not quite my cup of tea -- they're a little too happy, if you get what I mean. I've seen them live quite a few times though, so go figure.

Ok the first time I saw their video waiting for a movie to start at the theater, I bust a gut. No offense to their fans but I was just SHOCKED of how "happy" it was. And then I saw them on Leno and bust a gut again. I called my friend and said, "dude, you gotta check out the act on leno... OMG!!!" And he laughed and said "man, they were on the episode of Scrubs today too!"

Then later on we went on a mini roadtrip with some other friends and we brought up the ::snicker:: polyphonic spree. A friend said "hey, i have that album!"

So I told him to put it on because I'm not going to bash a group that much more without giving it a chance. It sounded fine... but yah, way too happy. That song they always play gets stuck in my head though.

It's strange how so many people feel uncomfortable about music that is happy in tone and subject matter! I know I did when I first heard them. If it's all about feeling bad about stuff and getting all angry about a life full of bitter disallusionment, people are more comfortable with that. Frankly, I'm digging them largely because it's not some forlorn soul whining into a microphone about how his love life sucks, or some such subject (a little too close to home I guess). It's just some folks who are feeling good, singing about it and sharing it with others!

i agree with Mothos on that.
even though most of my music is considered to be in the dark and depressing area (godspeed you black emperor, silver mt zion, migala, black heart procession, the cure and so on) this music is just great. great writing (musically) and playing, and their happiness just comes through

(though i do find godspeed and ASMZ more about hope then apocaliptic despair as they are usually painted)

If you like PS, they appear on "Wig in a Box" a tribute album to the film Hedwig and the Angry Inch. PS perform the song "Wig in a Box" (which sounds great with their choral vocals). TMBG, John Richman, Rufus Wainwright, Yoko One, Minus 5, Ben Kweller, Ben Folds, Sleater Kinney and a couple other louts appear on the CD, so you know it's good.
