hey any suggestions of songs about California? (about california, or mentions california in the lyrics) I'm trying to make someone home-sick, so he'd come back from japan.

- Weezer - California
- Quasi - California
- Dressy Bessy - California
- Rufus Wainwright - California
- Death Cab for Cutie - (one about driving in los angeles)
- Death Cab for Cutie - Song for Kelly Huckaby ("as the sun tortured california")
- Death Cab for Cutie - Tiny Vessels ("I spent two weeks in Silverlake The California sun cascading...")
- Jolie Holland - Goodbye Caifornia
- Bright Eyes - June on the West Coast
- Dionne Warwick - Do you know the way to SJ?
- Modest Mouse - Karma's Payment
- Pavement - heaven is truck (She is the queen of a canceled pasadena thrill")
- Silver Jews - Smith & Jones Forever!
- The vines - get free
- Beulah - (one where they yell out "california!")

hmm... with some of this stuff i'm kinda stretching it. There are some other obvious ones:

- Phantom Planets
- California dreaming
- Hotel California
- Red Hot Chili Peppers

that i don't want to include.

I guess there are also rap/hiphop songs that sing about california... or shout-out LA or Oakland or somethinmg.

*gasp* NOT include Hotel California? But...but...

One good one (if you're into faster more hardcore stuff): L.A. Beach Bum, by Subb. The lyrics are entirely about going back to LA, "Jumping on a plane, flying back to LA, I wanna have great sex right there in the sand."

If that don't make him homesick, I don't know what will 8)

Mamas and the Papas-California Dreamin

2Pac-California Loving

The Thrills album-"So Much for the City" was all about their stay in California

And here is a website I just found that might help... http://www.users.bigpond.com/arwon222/l ... fornia.htm

You can't go past: Al Jolson - California Here I Come

They always used to play it in Looney Tunes cartoons whenever someone was packing to go somewheres. :D

dik pose - thanks! i knew someone out there must have made something like that.

doesn't it seem like California gets a lot of love in song form? (but that's probably not the case in Country music)

Since Dik's link has trumped most of my California- titled suggestions, here are just a couple more:

2Pac - To Live & Die in LA
The Decemberists - Los Angeles, I'm Yours
Joseph Arthur - Echo Park
Elliott Smith - Angeles
Radiohead - Palo Alto

...although The Beach Boys' "California Girls" should be an essential track.

The Ramones do a sweet cover of California Sun. Rage Against the Machine has a whole album titled 'The Battle of Los Angeles'. Sublime's
'What I got' mentions Long Beach.

Have you dug into the whole 'surf rock' library? Musicians like Dick Dale and Gary Hoey may not mention California by name but their inspiration is the waves off of the California coast.

L.A. - Elliot Smith
California (Parts 1 & 2) - Mason Jennings (A Minnesota artist)
Kalifornia - Fatboy Slim
California Dreamin' - Hi-Standard (punk cover of Mama's & Papa's hit)
Screenwriter's Blues - Soul Coughing
