A series of loosely related events led me into the punk and hardcore scene. Mostly, I've been looking at older bands, all of which have long disbanded or died away. I'm still trying to solidify my own understanding of the punk world, so my direction is mostly "safe" and sticks mainly to pre-approved "classics."

Ground I've covered:

Sex Pistols
Black Flag (Rollins-era)
Ramones
Dead Kennedys (my favorite so far)
The Clash
The Distillers (quite a jump, I know)

Ground I'm looking to cover:

Minor Threat
Circle Jerks
Buzzcocks
Bad Brains
Operation Ivy
Iggy Pop/The Stooges
Black Flag (pre-Rollins)
Misfits
Rancid

Am I on the right track? Any suggestions? What else should I be looking for?

Leave out anything that's not early rancid - they eventually went the way of the Transplants, which is anything but punk ;)

Heh - a nice segway point, is Nothing Nice to Say, an awesome punk-related comic strip. It's a comic, and it's punk! You know it's cool. Read the newsposts, anc check out the bands Mitch (the artist) refers to - he's got nice taste.
NN2S is currently down....but they'll be back...they always are...and with MORE bandwidth! MORE FUN! AHAHAHA!

Against Me! is pretty good too. I think Bad Religion isn't bad too, but I don't listen to them for whatever reason.

My friend is into Against Me!

I listened to their acoustic-punk EP at his house; it was nice, very nice.

I pow-wowed with my godbrother and covered more ground, ie: Bad Brains, Minor Threat and some Misfits and some Circle Jerks.

My favorite punk-ish band is Tsunami Bomb.

88 fingers louie is also cool.

If you want a pretty cool look at punk scene history, check out the movie 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE

And then watch the Steve Coogan/Alfred Molina segment from COFFEE AND CIGARETTES, it's neat.

"24 Hour Party People" is highly recommended, and quite comical too.

I guess what adds even more flavor to the film documentary, from a designer standpoint, are the parts where the film mocks renown designer Peter Seville for handing in the band's gig-flyers in such tardiness.

That guy's known for making such late entrances in real life.
