I know someone recommended this instrumental ensemble in the 'what are you listening to...' thread a while back, and while I downloaded a couple of tracks from their website, I never really gave them a serious listen. But tonight, they reached out from the obscurity of my playlist and grabbed me. It's really good stuff (here come the "I told you so's...").
Cinematic in scope, with enough elements of electric and bass guitars alongside cellos and violins and the like, this ensemble is certainly accomplished enough to sweep you along with them. While there are some interesting key progressions and they play a little with the time signatures, they are certainly not as radically experimental as other modern instrumental acts (Godspeed You! Black Emperor immediately springs to mind as a similar group), but that doesn't diminish any of their lush orchestration.
Their third (?) LP was just released last month, and while their previous album is now out of print, they've made the entire thing
downloadable from their website. Worth giving a listen.
Bonus points are awarded to them for (a.) being a local act from Ottawa (will have to get my brother to snag me a copy of their CD), and (b.) naming a group of songs after The Muses.
