I'm... not as big a fan as I know some people around here are. Musically, she's really good. Her voice, er, not so much.

her voice really creeped me out at first, but now I can't get enough of it.

For those not familiar, she basically sounds like a screaming eight-year-old girl. And it's great! "Peach, Plum, Pear," and many of her other songs just wouldn't be as neat without it. But to some people it's like fingernails on the blackboard, and you can't argue with that... A lot of people I've played Mates of State for have the same reaction. :cry:

Here's the video for "Sprout and the Bean."

Her live performance is simply mesmerizing. I didn't appreciate her music until I watched that video, and after seeing her perform live in San Diego, I have become a huge fan.

I can't buy into the "adults that sing like children" aesthetic. I just can't. I know that I am a bad, bad person. I am so sorry. :(

Are you kids ready to have your little indie minds blown away by this?

The Decemberists cover Joanna Newsom's "Bridges and Balloons."

Kaboom!

She sounds like a screaming cat to me. ^_^;

As a former harpist, I do think it's kind of cool that she stuck with what can be a VERY unversatile instrument.

Holy cow... the video there has me interested. It's like Shirley Temple for a little bit, then it segues into 'We Represent the Lollipop Guild' with the layered chorus, all the while reminding me of Bjork.

I was unsure when I listened to the mp3 Neil linked on his site, but now I find myself playing the video again...

You know, I think I enjoy the covers of her songs more than the songs that she performs herself. Like I said before, the songs are really great, but it's just that voice of hers... :)

At any rate, here's Final Fantasy covering "Peach Plum Pear."

I hate to dig up graven topics, but here is a streaming video of her performing in Birmingham in November 2004
