I make different mixes depending on what I'm doing, but there's usually at least one Genesis (or member of), song involved in each one. Then maybe some George Winston or Yanni or Liz Story...something along those lines. There's also always some Tool in there if I'm working on a darker piece. Oh, and I also can't forget Frou Frou or Imogen Heap.

I'd go for rock anytime when it comes to squeezing out my creative juice. Marianas Trench, Hedley, Simple Plan.. they all sound great to me.

Like many others here, I also tend to make specific mixes for various type of work, though I prefer no background music when I'm writing. When I'm drawing however, I like to listen to mostly soundtracks and moody rock/ambient stuff:

-any Ghibli soundtracks by Joe Hisaishi (Princess Mononoke and Laputa being the most effective for me)
-Yoko Kanno (Ghost in the Shell SAC, Wolf's Rain, etc)
-Radiohead, Elbow, Kaki King, Elliott Smith, Eno...

On the other hand, if I'm doing something tedious at work (like rotoscoping), I would pick something loud and obnoxious just to stay awake...speed metal and prog rock usually do the trick. Probably not so good for creative thinking though. :)

hmmmm top 10....................in no particular order....

Skeletonwitch beyond the permafrost- great ridiculous deathmetal

Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack- uniquely good classical/technoish mix(good mix with above cd)

Gorillaz (either demon days or plastic beach)- oddly addicting, almost like surrealist music O_o

Final Fantasy soundtracks(either 9 or 10)- 9 sounds like a old silent film soundtrack(only better) even with old blurish sound. 10 is alittle more popish but better real recording.

anime soundtracks(either Akira or Ghible films)

i cant begin to narrow it down much more.....Johnny cash, micheal jackson, megadrivers, neskimos, tangerine dream, other videogame/anime/movie soundtracks.

and of course this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zwly1u-2rk

My current scitzo-ness music habits... I kinda don't think of them as albums any more... more like play lists

Arcade Fire

the New Gorrillaz

Cocteau Twins

Interpol

Dethklok (I didn't know I was a metal head :)

Myazaki (mostly when writing)

Favorite Remixes of Video Games

The Black Hole Soundtrack and ... Tron Soundtrack

Goldfrap

Kitchens of Distinction (The Death of Cool, and Strange Free World) best two albums

Legendary Pink Dots (they are hit and miss... but I have my super favs)

I don't know... thats what I've been drawn to lately... when not listening to books on tape :)

When I'm concepting, I need silence. For intense drawing, I sometimes can listen to music. When I go totally right brain, I like to keep my left brain occupied with comedy podcasts: Nerdist, Kevin & Bean, I Love Movies, Adam Carolla.

Anyone else use last.fm? I just found a good scrobbler for the Mac (ScrobblePod) and have recently started using the service again. Here's what I'm listening to now: http://www.last.fm/user/nateomedia
