Snowman animation: Fighting the Slide

You're right. There's something about the way we see things that really wants physics. It doesn't have to be physically accurate, even, but the suggestion at least needs to be there.

In the case of Milton (the snowman), it's also the sound. Originally, I was only going to have that song playing through the whole short, with no sound effects. But I wanted the snowman to feel heavy - if you've ever made a large snowman, you know how heavy those segments are. Now imagine it jumping up and down... you'd expect to see the divots left behind in the snow, sure, but you also expect to hear it.

Even though I consider myself something of an audio nut, and I know how important sound is, I was still surprised at how much difference those whumping sounds made. Without them, you feel a little removed from what's going on.
