I've been reading the TPBs for Fables lately and catching up. It's a pretty fun series and if you know your fairy tales you'll be in on a lot of jokes and the like. It's enjoyable.

I've been wanting to read them, but could never get into the art. I may have to set aside my art pretensions and check it out.
What's the first tbp anyway?

I picked up the first two tpbs and I am with Kingmixer on the enjoyable part.
The familiar cast of fairy tale characters with a new twist is fun. The inside art doesnt blow me away but its definately decent and is certainly not a problem ones you get into the stories. The amazing cover art by James Jean makes up double for whats inside anyway.

I love Fables. I own the first 4 trades. I've written a 'sort of' review for my fellow members of the studenttheatergroup I'm in here in The Netherlands. I'll translate some of my review.

Fables is a book about fable characters living in the real world.
The first TPB (Legends in Exile) deals with a murder, the murder of Rose Red. Fabletown's detective, Bigby Wolf (the big, bad wolf) investigates. We get to know Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk), Snow White, King Cole, Bluebeard, Prince Charming and a lot more characters -- after all, there are a lot of fables. This trade, although quite good, is not the best one I own, but the finding of the murderer is nice and quite unexpected - which is always a plus in detective stories.
The second TPB (Animal Farm) revolves around the Farm, the place where all the non-human looking fables live. Think of the three Piglets, Reynard the Fox and so on. There is a rebellion about to start in the Farm just when Snow White is there, and it's against her. Which side will she take, will she live? *gasp* Read and find out, dearest reader!
The third TPB (Storybook of Love) consists of a couple of stories, some big, some small. It involves characters and builds on plots from TPB's #1 and #2 so I cannot really comment on it.
The fourth TPB (March of the Wooden Soldiers) is the best one I know of. The introductory tale is amazing.

And the Mounted Police rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Legends in Exile : 7½
Animal Farm : 8+
Storybook Love : 8+
March of the Wooden Soldiers : 9-
