So I saw Superman today (movies tend to start later in the UK). As usual, there were plenty of trailers beforehand. And I'm starting to wonder about what exactly is going on in Hollywood. What's with all the crappy movies? The trailers started off with Snakes on a Plane (half the audience were in stitches at the crappyness of this movie- until now I thought this movie was just an internet rumour), and things didn't get much better after that. There was one with some tap-dancing CG penguin, and then a few entirely forgettable movies (I've forgotten what they were), and a Miami Vice remake, which looked like an entirely unoriginal action movie apart from the name. Even movies which should, by all reasoning, have been amazing blockbusters when you consider who made them, were universally disappointing. I am not enthusiastic about Cars (you can do better, Pixar!) and as for The Lady in Water or whatever it's called, I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt because I'd follow M. Night Shyamalan off a cliff, but... I am a bit concerned about it. What's the deal?

Yeah, it's been pretty disconcerting. What looked like a very promising summer for movies has been a series of letdowns one after the next. I'm hoping the film Chris and Khang designed, Monster House, will be the surprise hit of the summer, if only because it'll provide an antidote to all the bloated stuff coming out. I'm looking forward to seeing Lady in the Water as well. Oh, and Miami Vice should be good. Michael Mann hasn't made a bad film yet, and this is definitely his element (he created the original television series).

Well jdalton don't be too down on American Film. There are some films coming out under the radar that look like something worth yacking about. Some examples, Monster House, Lady in the Water, The Science of Sleep, Babel, The Prestige and I'll even toss in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford for good measure. Just hold tight and cross your fingers.

p.s. I dislike remakes as much as you, especially ones based on tv shows, but Miami Vice could be a rare exception as Mann is totally the only choice to try and possibly pull off a decent one. After all, as Kazu hinted, Mann has kicked out good if at least competent work like The last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider and Collateral. Okay so Ali was his too, but not a bad list overall. I think at least after Heat and Collateral he has a handle on the style needed to pull off a film like Miami Vice. My only worry, Foxx isn't his post Oscar lameness and Farrell isn't a washed up pretty boy from the Alexander mishap. Anyhow we all shall see. Living on Miami Beach and hanging in the Miami area will give me the scoop from ground zero on whether Miamians feel this.

Well Johnny, this thread you posted on Apocalypto might be enough to completely turn me around. My fingers are crossed. Do you know how hard it is to even find good resources on how Mayans dressed? Mel's people have done their research. :D
