Big, dumb pirate fun is how I'd summarize this movie. I really do miss the character moments and development of the first movie... Davy Jones didn't feel developed enough. There's only one character moment in this movie that really stands out --

SPOILER!!!!

Elizabeth's final action involving the chain. It was a great reversal of what the scene seemed to be, and I felt a genuine chill as we saw the calculating , cold side of what seemed to be a purely righteous and sympathetic character. The fact Jack Sparrow is so charismatic only makes the impact of that scene greater.

I think I palpably felt the time being chewed up by entertaining action set pieces. I agree with Kazu's basic summary -- if you go in with the expectations of a silly, entertaining summer movie, you'll have a hard time being disappointed. Nevertheless, it's a bit of a pity that this sequel doesn't reach the great swashbuckling heights of its predecessor.

Agree with Kazu and Joey re: depiction of natives. It's the 21st century, fellas.

Give the people exactly what they want=make $132 million on opening weekend.

On one level it is sort of offensive to me that they could be so calculating and crass with it...Make sure there are x amount of fight scenes, y times that Johnny Depp gets to make a funny weirdism/gesture, b gratuitous slapstick jokes, and the obligatory romantic intrigue. It was like they distilled what focus groups told them they liked the most from the first movie into a second "movie" to maximize potential earnings. Cut out all the boring bits and leave only special effects, swinging/rolling wooden objects, pretty men and gorgeous woman, and voila.

On the other hand, I loved watching it, so they calculated good. :D

Yuikio that was funny... and most likely true.
