Cowboy Bebop is the best tv series from Japan in my opinion. I love Big O and I'm damn happy someone got "beaten to a pulp over it", because they finally got the flow to finish that story. I loved Evangelion "BigTIME" but the ending was a mind F#@K. It was so abstract that even though it didn't lose me, it went no where. I heard it was because they ran out of money, but I doubt it. So, Bebop the greatest series so far? Or did the badass production get to me?

p.s. I will give props to Ghost in the Shell: Complex when it is officially released here stateside. I don't even want to mention Ninja Scroll the series yet because i haven't seen it and friends don't care for it against the Movie.

I've seen a couple episodes of the Ninja Scroll show. It's not very good.

Bebop is good. I think FLCL is better, but we might not want to count that as a series.

And I want to give a nod to His and Her Circumstance. It has some brilliant moments in it, but I'd probably accept Bebop as better overall.

yeah. I LOVE Bebop as well. although I kinda avoid it in a way. I have a problem with becoming too personal with (some) anime characters, and I just can't handle Spike dying. (wait, I didn't spoil it for you, did I?) I mean, I guess from a viewer's perspective, maybe I'm supposed to like the ending, because It's not all happy-go-lucky, but on the otherhand, I just want to shake Spike and slap him, and tell him that he's a motha^#%*( stupid ass to throw away his life for some "in to the sunset" ending. It really aggravates me that he's all "it was all a dream" or whatever, just completely blowing off the friendship he has around him.

See. I get too personal with them.

If we're talking about the Cartoon Network here, I must say that I'm a big fan of Lupin the Third. I remember watching those as a kid in Japan. I think they're awesome.

I really like it (well, because it's funny) when Goemon comes out with just his loincloth. I just imagine all the TV viewers thinking "what the F^%@?!" I guess it looks like he got a wedgie in dipers.

Cowboy Bebop's a great series.. but i'm not going to say it's the best. it's certainly up there..
i think neon genesis evangelion might be higher, but not by much.

now.. i'm not sure what this is...

http://www.cowboybebop.org/english/ut/index.html

but take it with a grain of salt since the creator has himself on various occasions stated he will not go back and do another cowboy bebop...

but if he's going to do a prequel... well....

you're saying that same thing about Ninja Scroll as my friends have said, that's sad. I had high hopes. Have you seen the Ghost in the Shell: Complex shows.

Sweet_Baboo
The ending to me was just vague. I think if they wanted to they could make it all continue. Here's to hoping. Spike is just a badass. They characters have something that I can't fully express in words other then say they connected. I never saw an episode of Lupin, but I know what it is. I recently saw the PS2 game coming out and it caught my full attention. Try to check it out if you haven't heard about it.

Stick
Evangalion was sweet, but better then bebop? I just can't agree on that even if I think it belongs right behind Bebop. E's ending was just to abstract. If that's the way it was supposed to go down what ever, but I heard they had some issues (money maybe). I did love the characters in E even Shinji Ikari, who whined to much as it went along instead of growing as a young man. Those Evangalion machines rocked hard though. I wasn't to happy about the boxset because it gave no room for the movies (LAME!) Bebop did. Now, the Cowboy Bebop Knockin' on Heaven's Door was sweet, but it felt like a stretched episode and not a fully played out movie, though it still rocked for me. Vincent Volaju rocked it against Spike and didn't come off to pushy doing it by the writers. Because remember only Vicious should do that.

P.s. guys what is FLCL?

I still think Bebop has it's flaws, granted not one such as the ending for evangelion (whch i felt was rushed), I also heard rumours that the creator of the series... wasn't all there at the time... but eva literally blew me away when i first saw it. It opened my eyes to anime and had everything that a good show should have, and then some... and it wasn't one of those shows where the good guys always won... as well as showing how frail a young person's mind can really be... it was amazing. There was a scene (i won't say what happened), where at the end where the Shinji screams as it goes to the "To be continued" screen.... i had goose bumps.

Bebop had alot of terriffic moments in it, but there was never a real cohesive story behind it in my opinion. It was a whole bunch of short stories put together, with spike's past as a continuing theme... if they went more into his past, i think i wouldn't be disagreeing with you. but i still feel that Eva edges out Bebop, if only slightly. And you can't beat the introduction from the first episode. That was cool.

As for FLCL...

You don't know what FLCL is?!? Wow.

it was created by GAINAX, same people behind Evangelion.

Let's just say it's the most unusual and yet one of the most amazing 6 episodes to ever be shown on screen.... check out Kean's take on it. He described his experiences with the show quite accurately. :)

And the music.... wow.

Man you had some good points. I agreed with you 100%, but I think Bebop hit it off more for me because of it's style. E was phat and the ending was rushed, which if your info is correct explained alot. As for GAINAX I'm curious now. This was one of those rare moments where one see and agrees with the other view finally, but still feels differently.

Ei vei, threads like these get me to feel guilty every time I watch anime. They also make me think twice of admitting that I know what this whole anime thing is all about. Since, over the Internet, I could be a dog, I can admit that I have a slight interest in the medium.

Is it the greatest TV series from Japan? Uhh.. That’s a strange way to construct a question. Is it the greatest animated TV series from Japan? There's no 'greatest'; subjectivity should not be underestimated when it comes to something like anime.

Ronin philosophy.
Cowboy Bebop is pretty darn good, and in no small part due to it’s ending. The whole works because the ending is consistent, any deviance would have compromised the entire premise. It’s a tragedy, and that’s why it’s unique. Jet, Spike, Faye and Ed all have troubled histories; they try their best to escape them, and do so for a short period of time (filler episodes). Life on the Bebop is mandate in some ways, they enjoy that, but as all great dramas show, the past you can’t run away from. Through chance of fate or otherwise, each member of the Bebop has time to reflect on their troubles and, in time, they find answers. The sad part is, the answers do not make them any less miserable. Put it off as stoicism, but each character has to follow through with what they left unfinished. Spike has to avenge Julia; he lived in miserable dishonor ever since the betrayal. This is something that he had to do; it doesn’t matter whether he actually kills Vicious, or never makes it past his bodyguards, he needs just to make an attempt. In the final parting between Jet and Spike, they for the first time stand as equals. Jet knows what honor is about, and even though it pains him, he understands. Faye on the other hand does not, she’s not a Ronin, but a common bandit.

I’ll throw in another recommendation: Niea_under 7: Very beautiful art and good animation. Character designs are marvelous. A very clever story. Aliens have landed the world over and they now live among humans. After a while, they aren’t even noticed anymore, unless they’re pesky. Doesn’t sound all that original, right? The smart part is where you notice that aliens aren’t at all alien-like (no extra arms or tentacles), but are like humans, with different skin color, strange clothing and exotic cooking – in other words, they’re immigrants. One of the main alien characters is just a typical Sikh that runs a 7-eleven (is that a stereo-type?). Niea is an underclass alien and is looked down upon the higher caste alien kids. They go through the motions, ‘alien-solidarity meetings’ and nostalgia for the homeland and even some obnoxious jokes about aliens not working but living off the state.

FLCL – what is it? Fun series from Gainax; great animation, 6 episodes. That’s it. Ohh, and Evangeleon? Unlike, say Boogiepop Phantom or Lain, there’s no way to make any sense out of it; you can’t even pretend. The show features characters that make Tenchi (of Muyo) look like The Terminator, pseudo-religious philosophy that not only manages to combine Jesus, but also lend credence to scientology as a serious movement. The ending episodes and the consequent films seemed to have been made with the singular purpose of impressing angst-filled 16 year olds. “No real girl understands me like you do, Ryoko”. Riii-ght. How about reading some Heinlein, you slackers? This is what’s wrong with today’s youth. I blame it entirely on the success of ‘The Matrix’; I bet you saw that, but not ‘Dark City’; didn’t you? You make me sick.

Just want to throw in my 2 cents. I think "Cowboy Bebop" is the best anime series I have seen, but I haven't seen many. I love the movie references, the characters, and the music. Damn this soundtrack kicks ass! The show has rekindled my interest in the Western genre.

By the way, has anyone seen the short lived show "Firefly"? Is it any good?

It was supposed to be a great series from what i heard..

Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy and co-creator of Angel) was behind the helm, and it was supposed to be similar to cowboy bebop... a space "western".. involving bounty hunters...

the stories and the acting was supposed to be strong.... and things were looking good.

unfortunately.. it was a short lived series, even though it was well recieved in reviews and critics... FOX decided to cancel the show after one season.. even cutting off the series prematurely.

one of the main reasons some people say is due to the fact that people were downloading episodes off the internet instead of watching the show on tv, which made it slump ratings wise.

I've never seen the show, but i plan on getting the DVD compliation... it has alot of goodies, plus i believe the 2 final episodes which were never shown on-air. It's supposed to be a best seller from what i've heard.

Niea_under 7 was alright.

Sometimes it reminded me of a more mainstream and cliched version of FLCL. They both had the Large Disconcerting Object Which Is Visible Anywhere In Town And Which Is Mysteriously Tied To The Events Of The Story. (Which I could appreciate, since I grew up in Flin Flon)

I think I would have liked it better if they had done more on the aliens-as-immigrants thing and the class system, instead of going for the cliched anime jokes, like "This character eats a lot!" ^_^

You had a good ronin thought and you E argument was funny.
Now I have Niea_under 7 to add to my watch list.

Robothero
Flin Flon looks weird.

Stick
Firefly is on dvd?
And is it really that good?

SonOfaRich
You have to see more anime.
But bebop is the funk I measure tv shows to.
I love Big O, but it is filler compared to bebop for me.

Yeah it came out on DVD, i think a week or two ago. I heard the DVD was so popular that FOX might actually produce a "Firefly" movie. I'm not sure if that will be in the works anytime soon.

Although I'm not a fan of Joss Whedon, I think I will check it out because of how much the premise reminds me of "Cowboy Bebop".
