GUNWHALE

Post by Gunwhale » Wed Sep 06, 2006 12:54 pm

This is the first strip for my character, Gunwhale. He's a giant whale that roams the open sea with a shotgun, wreaking havoc and inspiring legends the world over. I hope you enjoy.

A whale with a shotgun is absolutely never good news. Great work man!

Nothing is funnier than guns and whales, but put them together-now that's hilarious. Very good indeed. Looking at the first coupla panels I wasn't sure how the gunwhale was gonna look, but your style is great, so I was impressed when it emerged from the water...Can't wait to see more.

Guns, whales, and pirates! This comic has it all.
To view the last of me, a living frame
For one more picture! in a sheet of flame
I saw them and I knew them all. And yet
Dauntless the slug-horn to my lips I set,
And blew. "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came."

What a premise! This should be crazy fun.

What was the inspiration for this?

Um..actually, I used to be in a band, and we broke up. Then one day, I was looking to start a new band with some of the same guys, and I was trying to think of an utterly metallish band name, along the lines of Mastodon or Dragonforce, and so I just came up with Gunwhale. It's a freaking huge whale with a shotgun.

But yeah, we never formed the band, so I just used him as a character, and I think I'll be able to get some mileage out of him. :D

I'll post more strips soon. I have to go to class right now.

interesting, but I'm not sure how you'll get more than about three strips of material out of it. :?

Here is the first 'weekly' Gunwhale strip, as I guess you would call it. But let me explain more about Gunwhale. He has existed since the beginning of time, and doesn't alter history, but just plays a part in it. That being said, whomever he destroys is not based on GW's partiality.

Also, I'm planning on writing many stories from different civilizations' points of view, as they encountered the Gunwhale throughout history. That means that I'm going to try to tailor the art to fit the regional style of the civilization I'm writing about. Hopefully.

But here is the first of about 6-7 early strips that are kind of gag-strips. I inked these with Sharpies (before I started using india ink and nibs) and I welcome any criticism.

haha, i loves me some pirates! i'm definitely interested to see how the gunwhale transitions to other civilizations, could be really interesting. the only criticism i have is about line variation. and maybe keeping a consistant baseline on your text. otherwise, i think you're doing well!

Thanks for the kind words, man.
I've been working on line variation more and more, having switched to using ink and nibs (the weeklies are all sharpie), and I've recently bought an Ames guide.

Wow, this thread died...

I decided just to post all that I had.

Here's my mini Spanish Armada vs. the English 'story arc'.

I much preferred the first one. The gag ones don't seem to get me any closer to what the uncovering the legend of Gunwhale. Some of them are funny (particularly liked the pirates around the bonfire one) but I'm more interested in the seemingly comic epic that was started in the first one.

All in all, I like the Gunwhale! :D
