Haiku Comics

Post by nateomedia » Tue Jan 27, 2009 5:59 pm

Boy, it's been a while since I've posted. I just started up a new project with my brother and I thought I'd share. He's been writing these fun little monster haikus and he asked me if I'd like to make comics out of them. It sounded like fun, so we've been working on them for a couple of weeks now and have developed them into a web comic. He writes, I draw. They are definitely a little quirky and I'm not sure that they are everyone's cup of tea, but I am interested to hear what you guys think of them.

You can see the site at: http://haikucomics.com

These next three are running this week and start our first storyline. Two of them won't post until Wednesday and Friday, so I'm giving you guys a sneak peek:

Thank you! This has been a very interesting little project to work on. I think there is a lot of merit to setting up a weekly goal that has to be met, no matter what. I'm not completely happy with every drawing and I'm still working out my style a bit, but the deadline is forcing me to just live with things being imperfect.

I like the one with the gun too. My inking there reminds me a bit of Guy Davis, which is not something I'm sad about at all.

Okay, I promise that I won't keep publishing all the comics here, but I figured that I might as well finish the current storyline. The last part will publish Monday on Haiku Comics.

The tones on the latest few are really a cool addition. I loved the continuing storyline for a bit.

It's a real challenge to tell a story, and a huge talent to be able to do it while obeying the rules of haiku.

Roll on. I'm looking forward to many more.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement, guys! I guess I hadn't realized that the tones were having such a strong impact on the strips. Making these comics has been a really positive experience -- I've drawn about 40 of them now and I have learned so much along the way. I'll make sure to post some more strips every now and then so you guys can see how things continue to progress.

Well, the themes are still pretty gruesome, but I think the art is getting prettier:

Hooray! Haiku Comics hit its first major milestone today, publishing its fiftieth comic strip. To mark the occasion, Zombie Baby, who debuted in Haiku Comics very first strip, returned to claim yet another unsuspecting victim. You can see it here:
