I have been checking out the inking skills here and now you guys have me wanting to try inking too. Photoshop, pencil, pen, and Illustrator aren't giving me the lines you guys are achieving with inking.

I wanted to know, from your experience, what supplies you would suggest that would make the perfect kit for a beginner.

I'm prone to buying way too much for just starting out so hopefully this will help me with my self control and teach me to focus before I splurge. I thought I saw Kazu talking about supplies that were on his list of best choices but I couldn't find it in the search. Many of the posts reference the word "brush".

The more information the better.

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Crow Quill - Hunt no. 102 nib

Higgins Black Magic or Sumi Ink

Strathmore Smooth Bristol Boards

A smattering of of cheap technical pens like the Staedtler Pigment Liners, Expresso Pens and Alvin Permanent Markers. Just pick and choose based on what feels good to you.

That's about it, aside from pencils (blue and 2b), erasers (Mars Plastic), and ruling devices.

Brushes are also good for inking thick lines.

no, that's Mayhem. and there's more to that story. no brains were actually eaten. but the lead singer, named (coincidentally?) Dead, he shot himself in the head, blew his brains outk, and left a letter that said "sorry fot eh Mess." supposedly, Oystien name i cn't remember (founding member of Mayhem & Black Metal Godfather and scene king) took a piece of his skull and made a necklace or something. brain legend just grew out of that. still morbid. then Oystien was stabbed to death by avant gaurde black metalist Varg Vikernes .

as for emperor, their drummer Bard Faust stabbed a guy to death in the forrest. that's pretty evil, yah?

the lead singer, just married this stupid girl and makes crappy music with her. she's the Yoko of BM@

BM LESSON #1 COMPLETE!!!

blue pencils ar ecool.

 woah, that was a big derailment.

Hey guys, thanks for the information. I love it!

If you have more, keep it coming. I'm going to Meiningers to see if I can find any of this stuff there. 8)

I think you should just try lots of different ways, everyone seems pretty much divided over what's the best method, some people prefer brushes, some pens, some nib pens. It's all relative. Personally, I prefer brushes, I just find them fun to use, I like the way they're not as precise as pens, and have a nice round feel to their strokes. You can pick up a fairly decent brush from about £2 ($3?) so it's not that much and if you're just experimenting, you don't need an amazing brush.

Chuckbb: yeah, I remember now, didn't Varg escape a while ago and then get caught again? Is the guy's name euronymous, I remember hearing that name in connection with it?

Fure pens are nice too, and give good organic lines. Pretty much like have a pen/brush in one...just takes a little bit of time to get used to. Depending on where you are they can be easy to find (best bet is the Little Tokyo nearest you)...if you have trouble, easy way is to order them from Japan.

Oh yah, varg escaped and was caught after a car chase. It seems in norway, prisoners get to go home on weekends. so he went to visit his mother and at that point tried to escape. they have a really really light legal system there, he was charged with burning down numerous churches and murdering someone, and he only got like 13 years or something.

Euronymous was Oystien, i forgot to call him by his black metal name. he was the dude Varg murdered. he was like the father of black metal, he ran a record store just out of oslo, and it was like what Le Sex Shoppe was to punk, toblack metal.
