It really depends! When I was younger, I too had no clue what to charge and I eneded up getting taken advantage of. The way I figure out my hourly rate is like this: How much is that hour of work worth to me? It's not very scientific, but it works for me because in the past, I've been short changed ...

Do the Copics work for you? I bash through them in no time... maybe it's the batch I bought, or the paper I use... but the Microns hold up better for me. Well for the really really fine tips, they do tend to bend easily but they are replacable so it's not that big of a problem. However I did have o...

Hi there and welcome to the wonderful world of inking! I've found that the paper you're working on is pretty important when doing inks. I still don't like Strathmore Bristol but it's the only thing available in Hawaii (or at least thats all i've found). I tend to use whatever works and I'm not tied ...

Lulu does case wrap and dust jacket type covers.
I'd love to do one of these for my own collection. I'm not sure how much it would cost though.

nemu*nemu makes 1 year today!

I know it's probably not a big deal for a lot of you who've been doing webcomics for a while now... but nemu*nemu is now one year young! We'll be celebrating with a lot more nemu*nemu stuff (much more work!) that we'll be debuting at Kawaii-Kon in Honolulu, Hawaii in April. If we can survive this co...

I've always stayed away from spec work. I always tried to give the employer a good sense of my abilities by showing them my portfolio of past jobs and a wide variety at that. Granted I haven't done much illustration in the past few years for anyone but myself, but back in the day I made sure that my...

I've been freelancing off and on since 13 years old. I used to get a lot of illustration type work: signage, logos, lettering, book artwork, spot art for newsletters and t-shirt designs. In the early 90's it was mostly graphic design stuff like business cards, newsletters, flyers, and magazines. Eve...

Thanks for sharing comixpress.com gau dog! I think i might have seen that website previously when I was doing some research of print-on-demand shops. What surprises me the most is that they actually take files other than pdf! They'll take your quark files! Sometimes I wish Lulu would do that but I u...

@smaragddrache - Thats cool that you have access to that kind of equipment. Does it do binding as well? I guess in a way I kinda think of self publishing and print on demand is the same thing. With Lulu at least it is. But I understand what you mean. I only have access to Kinkos now and my work does...

wow thanks again for the tip! At this point, my brain is mush since we've been working on merchandise for the convention when we're not at our "real jobs". I need some rest so I can think straight! I think that postcard idea would be a good idea! Ah yeah... good ol moire patterns. I haven't had to d...

angeldevil: thank you very much for your insight! We have the proof copy and lulu did a pretty outstanding job considering its print on demand. Any problems with print quality was from our end, actually just me... I totally forgot about moire patterns when using tones and a lot of the strips had to ...

Has anyone here (besides the Flight Book) done a deal with Diamond before? I'm reading some of the terms right now and it seems like a lot.

We'll probably use Ka-blam for a special project later on. I got a sample from them and it was pretty nice stuff. We chose Lulu because they had a distribution package that allowed us to get an ISBN number and get into the online bookstores as well as the brick and mortar ones. I have no idea how to...

Anyone used lulu to print their books?

Hey all, We're approaching our first year of publishing our webcomic and decided to make a compilation. I got my proof back from Lulu and had to fix a few things before approving the final print. I was wondering how many of you have used Lulu and what you thought of it. Aside from the size limitatio...
