Re: Are all of you full time artists?
I operate a full time design business. Manage and coordinate Flash projects, do 3D modeling, website design, print design and illustration. Have been working on a graphic novel, but it is a challenge to find the motivation to solely focus on it and get it done. Last few years has been very good biz ...

Re: Hiring a Digital Colourist
Have to say it is much faster to colour with a tablet and technology then by hand. Much depends on the desired complexity ... I use a cintiq tablet and would never consider going back to traditional methods of colouring. Rates will vary .... since I'm an experienced practitioner, I tend to operate a...

Re: Digitally Drawing Comics
I invested in a Cintiq 21 UX some time ago, because I needed it for illustrating visuals delivered in Flash. I did all the illustrations directly in flash which saved me some 60 hours on the project. I paid it self off and then some. Since then I picked up Manga Studio EX4, and I would have to say, ...

That's fab Brian. The Illustration is excellent. Go Go Go. I have a load of 3D models to plow through before I can move on my book in any big way. Will be about 2 months. In the mean time, I have begun converting all my notes into Final Draft. Handy script writing app that I acquired when I attended...

For me, this is helpful knowing that are others trying to wrap their heads around a plan to make a Graphic Novel happen. Same issues coming from people in different circumstances with the same agenda. I operate as a small business, but I find myself consistently busy which is not a bad thing in itse...

This is my plan if I ever get to it ... go through a local printer, ... I do layout and design as part of my business so I can set it up. Print between 2000 to 5000 units ... not sure if it will be colour throughout or B/w. I have a contact with a local rep that can get the book into the local Chapt...

the biz
It's great to hear someone else's perspective on the market. My observations are limited since there are very few who hope to create for the market independently, but the more info that goes around the better we all can become at contributing to a sustainable industry. Other option with distribution...

My perceived issues relating to making a reasonable return of efforts ... Distribution - I don't think specialty comic shops are the best route to getting books out. Online has some potential. Book store should improve exposure, but you have to get in and have good presence. I found Amulet in limite...

From what I have observed, much of the success is in actually producing something. It is a daunting task, some 200 pages perhaps, to pull a insightful story together. I try not to commit my existence on it, but because of the personal belief that my efforts have value to an audience at large, I am c...

It appears consistent across the board with the comic book business. Generate a living by other means, and slide in the time to work on your personal project when ever possible. I'm lucky enough to have developed a strong client base in the local econony that keeps my small design, interactive media...

Design price is based on the quality of your work and the value provided to the client. Rates in this biz are all over the place. It ranges from $35/hr to $200/hr.
Copyright ownership can also have a value attached to it if the client so chooses to retain the rights and use the art for other things.

It was a great session, and provided me with plenty of insight on the potential of the industry. I tend to get caught up on whether I can make a go at it in the industry, and spend plenty of time reading, writing and going back and forth on plenty of illustrations on a story that has been in progres...

I personally work in the design industry and do some 3D work. You need to evaluate your portfolio and capabilities in comparison to others. View some of the portfolios on cgtalk. The industry is competitive, and you have to wow them to get in. Have to compete with all those others. Dig in your heals...
