Levitation and Wire Mothers

Friday, May 25th, 2007 by

Jim Ottaviani has written two new books that are debuting in July: Levitation, illustrated by Janine Johnston; and Wire Mothers, illustrated by Dylan Meconis (Flight 1)! Wire Mothers sounds particularly interesting — from the G.T. Labs website:

Psychologists know best, of course, and in the 1950s they warned parents about the dangers of too much love. Besides, what was ‘love’ anyway? Just a convenient name for children seeking food and adults seeking sex. It took an outsider scientist to challenge this. When Harry Harlow began his experiments on mother love he was more than just outside the mainstream, though. He was a deeply unhappy man who knew in his gut the truth about what love — and its absence — meant, and set about to prove it. His experiments and results shocked the world.

The science of love indeed! You can find out more about these books (and read an excerpt) over at the G.T. Labs website: Wire Mothers and Levitation.

Newsarama also has an interview with Ottaviani, which includes preview pages from both books. You can pre-order both books together over at Amazon.com, or separately, here and here.

Alien Circus

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007 by

One of Dave Roman‘s old projects, Alien Circus has recently surfaced on the web! Dave’s Livejournal fills in some of the details about his involvement with this comic:

So a while back I wrote a 3-part graphic novel series called “Alien Circus” for Platinum Studios that was beautifully illustrated by Luke Weber. It was a big space aventure series that mixed Hamlet with Marsupilami and was a lot of fun to work on. I ended up developing a whole universe complete with tons of creatures, planets, history and plots for potential spinoffs.

At some point Platinum decided to change the name to The Adventures of Tymm and register a domain name for it. But as far as I know they have no plans to actually release it in print.

The name of the comic has since been changed back to Alien Circus and is now being serialized on the web. Written by Dave and illustrated by L. Frank Weber, there has been some Internet controversy over the credits and history of the project, but Alien Circus is still a gorgeous looking comic that’s definitely worth spending some time with.

Sketchcrawl 14 fundraiser and art auction

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007 by

Enrico Casarosa and Ronnie del Carmen, the brains behind Sketchcrawl, have organized a huge fundraiser and art auction for this weekend’s upcoming Worldwide Sketchcrawl on May 19 & 20! From Enrico’s blog:

Saturday May 19th it’s the 14th World Wide SketchCrawl and as you might have heard we are making it a world wide fundraiser.

Sunday May 20th we are organizing with our Maverix Studios friends a benefit Art Auction here in San Francisco.

All the funds we raise will benefit the humanitarian Organization Emergency – life support for civilian war victims.

Emergency builds quality care and hospitals to treat civilians in war-torn countries. It’s a wonderful wonderful organization that has been doing amazing humanitarian projects in places such as Afghanistan, Cambodia, Sudan, Sierra Leone and Iraq. The more I hear of what they’ve been doing the more I am excited about helping them.

How can you participate? Simple! If you’re planning on participating in this weekend’s Sketchcrawl on the 19th, just download this sponsor form and hand it to anyone that might be interested in sponsoring your day of drawing. Ask your friends and neighbors to donate how ever much they can, your goal being that you want to raise $100 in total for that day.

And on the 20th in San Francisco, stop by at Maverix Studios for the art auction (featuring a very impressive lineup of artists):

where: Maverix Studios (1717 17th Street, SF)
when: 5pm to 9pm
how: silent bidding, Final bids at 7:30pm.
We will also have a benefit raffle with special prices.

For more information on these events, head over and read Enrico and Ronnie‘s blog posts about it. For more information about Emergency, you can watch this video or visit their website.
