Ink, Thunder and an Iron Will

Saturday, December 30th, 2006 by

Have you been reading Becky Cloonan and Vasilis Lolos‘s new blogs? You should be. They talk about all sorts of stuff: livin’ it large in Athens, Greece; being STRONG enough to DRAW COMICS; obsessing about Yanni; and getting EXCITED! about COMICS! Some things never change, I suppose.

So check ‘em out. Becky’s blog and Vasilis’s blog.

Whoa.

Animator Dean Dodrill has taken Michel Gagné’s character Zed, and animated him. It looks fantastic!

Oh, and if you’d like to see an early preview of Michel’s story for Flight 4, you might want to check out his Saga of Rex page…

Matt Forsythe is now selling the second print collection of his Ojingogo comics online! He’s also reprinted the first book of this (twice) Eisner nominated comic, so if you missed out on picking one up the first time, now’s your chance. The quality of these books is outstanding, so you definitely know you’ll be getting your money’s worth (plus, he’s throwing in free sketches for all orders).

At last! The first book of Les enfants d’ailleurs by Bannister and Nykko has arrived! Bannister has posted more photos of the BD in its final form here. Les enfants d’ailleurs will be released in Europe on January 3rd, 2007. If your local comic store imports BDs, this would definitely be worth checking out!

“Monster Sex” show

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006 by

From Jen Wang’s livejournal:

Quick, short notice! “Monster Sex” prints up for their own show at Amber Lounge, San Francisco December 14th, this Thursday night! After my last class even! It’s nice that even after all this time and how much I’ve milked them, I still had a lot of fun enlarging and framing each one. It’s a bar show so doors open early and close late but I’m probably gonna be there for 8pm on until I’m bored enough.

Sounds like it’ll be a grand time. Full details here. You can also view these prints online at Jen’s website.

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006 by

Chris Butcher has just posted an interesting analysis of Jeff Smith’s Bone covers, primarily charting the evolution of the cover design for the first book, Out From Boneville. It’s fascinating stuff.

Just Married!

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006 by

Well, it’s official — Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman are now married! Congratulations to them both!

Being the lovers of comics that they are, they even put together a wedding anthology to give out to the wedding guests! It’s all so very exciting. You can check out a couple of pieces from the anthology by Clio Chiang and Vera Brosgol, as well as the comic that Dave used to propose to Raina, “How we got Engaged!”

(the image at the top of this post is a panel from the comic that Bannister and I collaborated on for their anthology).

Playing Catch-Up

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 by

Apologies again for the prolonged silence ’round these parts — everyone’s been really busy working on their own projects these days and we’re also deep into the production of Flight 4 at the moment, but let’s take some time get caught up on some news and comics, shall we?

Oh, and one last item: it appears that Flight 3 has been nominated for a Cybil award (the Children’s and YA Bloggers’ Literary Awards) in the graphic novel category, alongside other authors such as Gene Yang, Alison Bechdel, Raina Telgemeier, Hope Larson and Amy Kim Ganter, just to name a few. Fine company indeed!
