Supanova Pop Culture Expo 2006
Wednesday, October 25th, 2006 by KeanFor all you Aussies out there, our very own Doug Holgate will be exhibiting at this year’s Supanova Pop Culture Expo in Sydney, and he will be debuting a 52-page comic, featuring the very first story of Checkmate Wordsworth, and on the flip side, Spaghetti Western: Chupacabra Wears Purple Breeches. This comic alone would most definitely be worth the price of admission.
Supanova will be held at Sydney Olympic Park and runs from October 27 to 29. Full details can be had at the Supanova website.
(PS. did you know that Doug has illustrated the first two issues of Zack Proton? It features intergalactic mailboys and space chimps. What more could you possibly want in a comic?)

Street Cents: Tips on Self-Publishing
Wednesday, October 18th, 2006 by KeanAn interesting article on self-publishing, care of CBC’s Street Cents. Quite a few Canadian authors and artists — including Halifax-based Hope Larson — discuss their thoughts and experiences on self-publishing. Considering that we were fully prepared to self-publish the first Flight anthology at one point (before we were approached by Image Comics), this is an article that will probably be useful to other writers or artists interested in pursuing a similar sort of path.

I’m having an official ‘release party/signing’ at Rocketship in Brooklyn, on Sunday, November 12 at 4 PM. It’ll be a team signing with my friend Abby Denson, and this will be a super kid-friendly event, complete with free ice cream and cookies! Tiny Island
Sunday, October 8th, 2006 by KeanJacob Magraw-Mickelson’s latest solo exhibition, Tiny Island, is currently on display at Motel in Portland, OR until the end of October. From the Motel Gallery page:
“Magraw-Mickelson continues working in gouache on paper, expanding his series of deconstructed landscapes and affected flora, and introducing anatomical dissections. Playing with scale and perspective, Magraw-Mickelson’s candy-colored hyper-realities toy with the tensions of structure and chaos. Botanical and corporeal cross-sections reveal inner workings of cells, veins, hidden terrains and root tendrils. Densely layered topographies are spliced and peppered with miniscule flora. Combining free-flowing improvisation with detailed precision, these simulacra reference the systems and structures of the natural world while suggesting an uncontrollability and excess that is both fantasy and science fiction.”

Pushdot gallery show: “One Shot”
Wednesday, October 4th, 2006 by KeanThis coming October 5th, Pushdot Studio will be hosting a new gallery show, “One Shot,” a collection of art focusing on single images and panels taken from various comics. Artists featured in this gallery show include Chris Baldwin, Colleen Coover, and the entire Pants Press group together again — Bill, Clio, Dylan, Erika, Jen and Vera. It’s worth noting that Clio and Vera’s pieces in particular feature panels from each of their forthcoming Flight 4 stories.
The show is scheduled to run until early November, so if you’re in the Portland, OR area, stop by the gallery and check it out for yourselves. For the rest of us unfortunate souls, I suppose we’ll just have to make do with the online version of the gallery (don’t miss out on that second page!).
