Women in comics!

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006 by

This coming April 20-23, the 27th annual Women Writers Conference is going to be held at the University of Kentucky, and includes such presenters as Sarah Vowell, Phoebe Gloeckner, Lauren Weinstein, and our very own Amy Kim Ganter! She will be speaking on the free graphic novel quorum on Saturday, April 22 at 3pm at Arts Place. More info here.

The Associated Press has a fantastic article on Raina Telgemeier and her latest comics adaptation of The Babysitter’s Club! It’s also worth noting that Raina will be in Toronto next week, as a guest of both the Women of Comics symposium (alongside other such speakers as Becky Cloonan, Colleen Doran, Jill Thompson and Linda Medley, just to name a few) and the Paradise Comics Toronto Comicon (which runs from the 28-30th of April).

Flight @ APE

Flight @ APE

A bit late, but here are some links to APE con reports. We had a great time hanging out with everyone in San Francisco. I wish we could hang out with all of the Flight artists every day. It makes me sad that we can’t. You know… I think we’re just gonna have to find a way to make that happen someday. So anyway, here are them Con reports:

Jen Wang
Erika Moen
Raina Telgemeier
Vera Brosgol

Color Proofs

And here’s a photo of the Flight 3 proofs before I sent them back to Random House. Ironically, the colors here are inaccurate because the lighting in my room was so poor I had to adjust the image in photoshop.

Weekend Update

Thursday, April 13th, 2006 by

This is coming a little late, but just a quick recap of this past weekend: the Alternative Press Expo came and went, and some of the photos from the event are starting to trickle out. Raina Telgemeier and Jen Wang have photos from the day (Raina’s photos and Jen’s photos), and you can check out some of the Flight crew in action. It’s also worth mentioning that it was Kazu’s birthday last Saturday!

And via Chris Butcher’s blog, some photos from the Toronto Speakeasy Comic Show.

Night Time

Sunday, April 9th, 2006 by

This evening I was re-reading Michael Cho‘s comic, “Night Time,” and I realized that I had forgotten what a lovely little story it was. It’s a deceptively simple story about adolescence – a snippet of a story, really – but it’s so well executed that it’s hard not to be swept along by it.

Read “Night Time” in its entirety here.
