Flight 3 in PREVIEWS

Previews Cover

Flight 3 is now soliciting in this month’s issue of PREVIEWS magazine. For those that aren’t familiar with the publication, this is the monthly catalog put out by Diamond Comic Distributors that is used by all comic shops across America. In order to get copies of the book you want in stock, it’s important for you to head to your local comic store and ask them to pre-order copies, otherwise they won’t know to stock them (in the case of lesser-known works). FLIGHT 3 is currently soliciting from Ballantine Books on page 245 of the catalog, with a full-page ad on page 268, and is a Featured Item on page 206. Make sure to let your local store know to have some in stock! My friend Michel, whose work appears in Flight 3, also has his book, Zed, solicited on page 293. Highly recommended. Also, the cover of Previews was done by future Flight artist Gabriel Ba.

Flight 2 – JAN051598

Kean and Mr. Depression

Kean and Mr. Depression
Every now and then, Kean posts one of his Mr. Depression comics. They always bring a smile to my face, even if at the expense of little Kean.

Flipbook!

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006 by

I made mention of Neil’s little Flipbook! animation in a previous post, but it might also be worth mentioning these other neat animations as well:

Peg flying and Peg’s Lazer Eye by Ronnie del Carmen
Flies (and a doggie) by Phil Craven
Gabriel The Faun by Man Arenas

Flight news round-up

Monday, March 20th, 2006 by

The blog updates have tailed off quite a bit lately, and we’re terribly sorry about that. Things have been quite busy in the Flight camp, so here are a few noteworthy news items to bring you all up to speed:

There are plenty of things that I’m absolutely certain I am forgetting to mention; hopefully we won’t need too many more posts like these to get properly caught up!

Turtle Animation in Flash

Sunday, March 12th, 2006 by

First off, I recently discovered that The Those Guys have a blog. And on this blog, Mike Roush posted a pretty sweet animation done in Flash MX! Mike makes a great point about Flash getting a bad rap for its limitations, considering they were self-imposed by the artists who discovered that it did limited animation so well. It’s cool to see people use it in other ways, as Flight forum regular Pascal Campion illustrates in posts like these. (This is also done in Flash)

The Baby-Sitters Club

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006 by

The Baby-Sitters Club The first volume of Raina Telgemeier‘s graphic novel adaptation of the popular book series “The Baby-Sitters Club” is now available at comic book stores. The pages I’ve seen so far look great! This is the first of a series of novel-to-graphic-novel adaptations from Scholastic’s Graphix imprint. They’ll also be publishing adaptations of the popular “Goosebumps” book series in a small anthology format.

Process Recess

Saturday, March 4th, 2006 by

If you don’t already know of James Jean’s work, I’m pretty sure most of you are aware of him on some level — he has provided illustrations for clients such as TIME, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, SPIN and the New York Times, just to name a few — and while his online portfolio is something else to marvel at, so too is his blog, Process Recess.

Process Recess is home to many of James’ concept sketches and figure drawings, as well as his own work process as he moves from initial sketches to the final product. It’s all terribly fascinating.

The second edition of his artbook — also called Process Recess — is once again available for preorders through AdHouse Books.

Moresukine

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006 by

German cartoonist Dirk Schwieger has recently moved to Tokyo, and is keeping a fantastic diary of his time there. Documenting everything from his visit to the Ghibli Museum to awkward social interactions with the public toilets, it’s a wonderful exploration of an expatriate’s view of Tokyo and Japanese culture, all of it drawn into a little Moleskine.

Go here to begin reading MORESUKINE, and if you’re looking for more afterwards, don’t forget to check out Dirk’s “comic documentary” about the Elves in Iceland.

Family Man

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006 by

Dylan Meconis has just launched her new comic, Family Man, and even though only the prologue has been posted so far, it already looks like a worthy successor to her first long-form comic, Bite Me!

Updating every Wednesday, Family Man will definitely be something to keep an eye on. Begin reading it here.
